Rapport Onderwyserfonds

The Rapport Onderwysfonds (ROF) is a non-profit organisation (NPO) that focuses on supporting tertiary education students with loan bursaries. Every year a portion of the interest-bearing loan may be converted, on a sliding scale, to a bursary based on academic results. In this way, the student is motivated to achieve better results with a view to a smaller amount of debt being repayable at the end of his/her term of study. The repayment to ROF by students at the end of their studies, ensures that the money remains in circulation to generate new loan bursaries for ROF students and to manage the Fund in a sustainable manner.

For the period the AVI Community Trust is supporting 28 tertiary education (B.Ed) students with loan bursaries of R40 000 each per annum to pursue a career as a teacher. The financial contribution enables the students to continue their studies without the burden of financial restraints.

Carel du Toit Trust

The Carel du Toit Centre provides a vital service for deaf children, many of whom come from disadvantaged communities in the northern and southern suburbs of Cape Town. The aim of the Carel du Toit Centre is to offer a holistic approach for the detection, intervention and treatment for hearing impaired children in order for them to enter a school where they have access to the mainstream curriculum and have adequate spoken language in order to thrive in a hearing society.

In this financial year support to the Carel du Toit Centre went towards the Transport programme, the centre has five school busses covering 5 transport routes across the Western Cape. Many of the parents are unable to pay transport and are subsidised by the school, placing a huge expense on the school. Carel du Toit Centre is the only school of its kind in the Western Cape and most of the learners come from far outlying areas. More than 60% of the learners depend on our Access to Specialised System to get to school and back home.

Supplementary Education Trust (Star Schools)

Star Schools aims to empower learners by enabling them to achieve their potential in their final matriculation examinations and thus gain entry to higher education. The Incubator Programme serves to supplement and enhance what learners are taught at school. It is designed to interrogate foundational gaps, plug these and take learners on an academic journey which teaches them the knowledge and skills to bridge across from basics to cognitively demanding and high order content. Through the Incubator Programme, learners are exposed to high-quality educational materials and instruction in English, Mathematics and Physical Sciences, thus enabling them to pass their examinations at levels with which they can further their education at a tertiary institution. The inclusion of English as a subject has not only benefited the improvement of all other subjects, but also the learner’s ability to meet the demands of tertiary education and the workplace.  Career guidance instruction and life skills is also provided.

The AVI Community Trust continues to support 2 Incubator Programmes, Durban and Winterveldt, with a total of 270 learners for grade 10 to 12.
