Safe Study

Safe Study has created safe urban spaces for the children in Johannesburg CBD since April 2020 to engage in foundation learning support that combines arts, academic & mental wellness into one educational experience. Through the creation of a safe urban space, they are able to run weekly arts and cultural programs covering academic support, visual arts, environmental education and outdoor education.

The AVI Community Investment Trust funding contributed towards the operational needs of the organization in ensuring that they continue to provide the weekly programmes to underprivileged children.

Swiss – South African Co-operation Initiative (SSACI)

Since its inception in 2001, SSACI, a non-profit, public benefit organisation, has supported a range of training and job creation projects for South African youth and its purpose over the past 20 years has been to enable young people to become more employable by aligning vocational curriculum to industry’s needs through workplace learning.

The AVI Community Investment Trust supported 10 artisan learners who completed the SSACI led apprentice training and support was supplemented by the learners being hosted at two of the AVI Business Units for their workplace-based training.

The Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children

The Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children was opened in 1999 in response to the high rates of violence against women and children on the Cape Flats. They have managed to assist over 260 000 women and children survivors of Gender Based Violence since opening their doors.

AVI Community Investment Trust funding contributed towards operational costs of the Centre, this will enable the Centre to continue to provide cost-free services 365 days a year to abused women and children employing a comprehensive range of services for the effective treatment and prevention of violence against women and children.

Menstruation Foundation

Menstruation Foundation and O – Graceland are working on ending period poverty through the provision of free locally made eco-friendly pads for girls and young women through the installation of pads vending machine.

To date the AVI Community Investment Trust has donated six machines at six different high schools in KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and the Western Cape. The support continues as funding goes towards restocking the machines with a year’s supply of sanitary pads, this will ensure that the machines are fully stocked on a monthly basis.

OneVoice SA

OneVoice South Africa (OVSA) is a small organisation, with a big Vision, of a world where young people can actively engage on meaningful opportunities for personal development and raise their voices to bring about a healthier future for themselves and their communities.

The AVI Community Investment Trust contribution assisted with the roll-out of the Life Skills and Enterprise Projects with the new Grade 8, 9 and 11 learners, in their two partner schools.

Nthuse Foundation

Nthuse Foundation was established in 2013 with the aim to assist youth with disabilities within varied ranges of disabilities, from physical, sensory, psychiatric, neurological, and intellectual disabilities, to obtain a tertiary qualification. By integrating disabled students with non-disabled students, they are creating awareness that disability is a way of life and not a separate society. They focus on Ability, Attitude and Successful Integration into the workplace. They believe in empowering and equipping youth with disabilities from previously disadvantaged backgrounds, with the means to obtain a Tertiary qualification, to provide them with an equal opportunity to enter into the workplace and become a part of the economically active population.

The AVI Community Investment Trust funding contributed towards 4 deserving students who are living with disabilities to further their studies in commerce and information technology degrees.

Olico Maths Education

OLICO offers a sense-making and confidence-building approach that makes math’s accessible and meaningful. OLICO provides high quality math’s resources and after school math’s tuition tailored to the learners at the school. Through the development of high quality math’s resources and programmes, they test and refine their approach through direct implementation and in collaboration with partnering teachers, tutors and NGOs.

The AVI Community Investment Trust has adopted and expand the OLICO Maths Education programme at Alex High School, this will fundamentally transform the math’s performance of the school and make a notable impact on the math’s results of the wider Alex community.

Michaelhouse Community Partnerships Trust

Michaelhouse Community Partnerships Trust was founded in 2000 and seeks to meaningfully invest in local public schools. The Trust partners with 18 public schools located between Lions River and Mooi River in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands, to improve education and to offer teacher development through training and mentorship.

A key project that benefits from the AVI Community Investment Trust funding is the Edu-helpers programme. A group of 6 Edu-helpers who are passionate, qualified or qualifying teachers were recruited to teach, tutor, coach a sport or assist with any development programmes required to support the school where they are placed as well as the surrounding community.

Leap Science and Maths School

LEAP Science and Maths Schools provide free education to students from high-need communities, and have mathematics, physical science and English as mandatory subjects. Their school day is extended to 9 hours, and they have Saturday classes and formal holiday programmes. Every LEAP assisted school is partnered with a more privileged school within the surrounding area. This three-way collaboration creates the opportunity to share excellence in all spheres.

The relationship with LEAP School started with 1 Grade 12 learner that was funded in 2020. The support has since increased to 10 learners which are between Grade 8 and 12 from the Diepsloot School in Gauteng, the Alexandra School in Gauteng and the Langa School in Western Cape.

Just Grace

Established in 2012, Just Grace aims to alleviate poverty in the Langa community of Cape Town by supporting education attainment and skills training, through the delivery of a range of education, community development and entrepreneurial projects. To ensure the impact of their work, they work from premises in Langa, identify needs and design projects through consultation with community members and organizations.

The AVI Community Investment Trust continues to provide funding towards the Just Grace Qhubeka youth programme. The funding is primarily focused on providing participating youth with comprehensive material support and guidance over a four-year period (from Grade 9 to Grade 12).
